Everything you need to know before visiting Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle, or the “castle of the fairy-tale king”, was built by King Ludwig II to give him more privacy. It was the castle where the king liked to get away from his duties, and he particularly liked the period of the Middle Ages. Many of the paintings at Neuschwanstein Castle were inspired by the Middle Ages as well as Richard Wagner’s operas. The king actually dedicated the castle to Wagner! Neuschwanstein Castle is surrounded by beautiful lush forests and sprawling meadows with amazing views! Book a visit and see why the king liked it so much!

What is so interesting about Neuschwanstein Castle

See where the king of Bavaria lived

Neuschwanstein Castle was built by King Ludwig II, the King of Bavaria. Its construction began in 1869. Ludwig II became king when he was only 18 years old, and the famous French poet Verlaine called him the only true king of the century.

Admire the beautiful paintings

As you explore the castle, you will notice that the paintings feature repeating characters. The main ones are the poet Tannhäuser, the swan knight Lohengrin, and Parzival, the Grail King. You can also notice many swans around the castle. Swans were heraldic animals of the Counts of Schwangau, whose successor was King Ludwig II.

Richard Wagner’s influence

Wagner was a big influence in the decoration of Neuschwanstein Castle, as many paintings were inspired by his works. The paintings were not directly inspired by his operas but more so by the medieval legends that Wagner used when composing his works. Because of this, the king dedicated the castle to the famous composer.

See what luxury meant to the king

Even though the King enjoyed medieval legends and scenes, he also liked having contemporary luxuries. Neuschwanstein Castle actually had central heating, running water on every floor, hot water in the kitchen, an automatic flushing system, telephones, and electric bells, which the King used to call servants. The castle was actually meant to be a recreation of a medieval castle but with all the contemporary amenities. Hohenschwangau Castle is also nearby, where Ludwig II grew up. The king wanted Neuschwanstein to be an even better recreation than the old castle.

Feel like a royal in the Throne Room

The Throne Room is one of the most stunning rooms in the castle, which actually used to be just an audience room. It was upgraded, but not to give audiences. The Throne Room was supposed to be a copy of the Grail hall. On the premises, there is also a “knights’ bath”, inspired by the ritual baths of the knights of the Holy Grail.

Walk on the Marienbrücke or Mary’s Bridge

Maximilian II, Ludwig’s father, had the bridge built as a gift for his consort Marie in the 1840s. The bridge offers an amazing view of the castle and the landscape around it!

Plan you visit to Neuschwanstein Castle

Best time to visit: We recommend visiting Neuschwanstein Castle in spring or fall when there are fewer crowds. A visit in the fall is especially recommended because the surrounding landscape is painted orange, red, and yellow. It’s a stunning view that you will certainly enjoy! There are more visitors in summer, so we recommend avoiding a visit if you don’t like crowds. Winter is also a beautiful time to visit because the snow makes for beautiful vistas. However, it can be harder to get to the castle because the shuttle bus does not operate if there is snow or ice on the roads, and Mary’s Bridge, which offers beautiful views, may be closed. You should book a visit during the week, instead of on the weekend, to avoid crowds.

Getting there: The best way to get to Neuschwanstein Castle is by shuttle bus, which departs from parking P4, found below Hohenschwangau Palace. The bus cannot stop directly in front of the castle, so you will walk about 10-15 minutes downhill to get to the castle entrance. You can buy your ticket on the bus, and the buses operate according to demand, not on a fixed timetable. Please note that the buses do not operate if there is snow or ice on the roads. If you are driving to Neuschwanstein Castle, you can park your car at paid parking lots in the village of Hohenschwangau and walk to the castle from there. It takes about 30-40 minutes (about 1.5 km) along a steep uphill road, and it may be strenuous for some. Visiting the castle is made more fun with a horse-driven carriage, which you can book at the Hotel Müller, Alpseestraße, Hohenschwangau. Buy your ticket from the driver, and enjoy a ride that will add a nice charm to your visit. The driver cannot go all the way up to the castle, so you will have to walk the final 10-15 minutes. If you go by bike, use the bike lane, as bicycles are not allowed on the road to the castle. The bike lane starts about 100 m after you start cycling on Neuschwansteinstraße. To get to Neuschwanstein by public transportation, you can take a train to Füssen and then a bus to Neuschwanstein (the bus stop is called Hohenschwangau Neuschwanstein Castles, Schwangau).
