Loved my visit!

It was very interesting to visit a castle that was built to look like an old castle and never really served its purpose. It is very beautiful, though, and really looks like a castle from a fairytale. The interiors are beautiful, too, with many paintings, especially the throne room. The views are gorgeous! You can see far away from any window, and it was great to stop sometimes and just enjoy the view. Plus, having an audio guide there was eye-opening, as I would have completely missed all of the history.

Great architecture & views

I loved my visit to the castle! We got a horse carriage up there, which really fit the theme of being in the past. The castle is beautiful and looks straight out of a movie. It was great to see where royalty lived and what their everyday lives were like. It was also nice to just walk around and see all the luxury.

DISCOVER KING LUDWIG II'S PLACE OF RETREAT

Save time entering Neuschwanstein Castle with these timed entry tickets! Your ticket includes an audio guide, so you will learn about the castle's history. It is a very popular attraction, with about 1.4 million visitors each year. It was built by King Ludwig II, and its construction started in 1869. The king wanted the castle to be a way for him to escape and have more peace. He really liked the Middle Ages, so many of the paintings inside Neuschwanstein Castle were inspired by that time period, more specifically by Wagner's operas. The composer's influence was so big that the castle was dedicated to him! The construction of the castle took a long time, and the king actually never saw it finished.

THE CASTLE WAS BUILT USING THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY

The king wanted only the best, so the castle was built with contemporary amenities and the latest techniques. Although Neuschwanstein Castle looks like an old castle from the outside, on the inside, the king enjoyed central heating, running hot water, telephones, a lift to transport food upstairs, and a system of electric bells to call servants.

WHY WAS NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE BUILT?

Ludwig II grew up in Hohenschwangau Castle, a castle inspired by medieval architecture, which had many scenes from legends as interior decoration. When he became king, he wanted to build a new castle and make it look even more medieval. Castles were not needed anymore for their defense purposes, but the king enjoyed a fairytale version of a monarchy, and living in such a castle fit that fantasy. The castle has a walled courtyard, an indoor garden, towers, and even an artificial cave. The throne room was inspired by Byzantine basilicas, with the blue ceiling having stars on it. It is a great way to see how even people in the past idealized the past. Nearby is the Marienbrücke, a bridge that offers stunning views of the castle and the beautiful nature of the area.
